Many large and small appliances can be recycled. Appliances often contain heavy metals and toxic chemicals that need to be disposed of properly, so recycling your old appliances is the best choice for eco-friendly disposal.

Larger appliances like washers and dryers, ovens, dishwashers, and refrigerators can be broken down and sold as scrap metal. However, for certain appliances like air conditioners, a professional must remove the freon before it can be scrapped. You will be responsible for moving, lifting, loading, and transporting your appliances to the scrap yard.

The market value of different metals frequently changes, so there is no guaranteed amount you will receive for a scrapped appliance.

Some charities will pick up used appliances for free or for a small fee. However, appliances must be in good working condition to be eligible for donation. Some charities will charge you a fee if they discover they can't accept your appliance, so make sure you research each charity's requirements for in-home pickup and donation service.

Certain charities, like Goodwill, can't accept bulky or large appliances at all. If you bring your appliance to a charity drop-off center, they might offer to dispose of it in a landfill for you, where it will take 200-500 years to decompose. Appliances contain heavy metals that are often toxic to soil and groundwater, so you want to avoid the landfill whenever possible.
